The Good TikTok in China (Douyin)

In 2021, the Chinese government made rules that say kids can only play online games for one hour a day and only on Fridays, weekends, and holidays. Children under the age of 14 can only play for 30 minutes a day. Furthermore, the content directed towards children includes science experiments, museum exhibits, and art exhibits, all of which are designed to inspire children. When you look at the content that TikTok serves to most kids outside of China, you’ll notice that it’s mostly entertainment videos, sexually explicit material, data harvesting, and other dangers that are discussed in this article.

1. Addiction. Impact on attention and learning abilities.  

Numerous studies have demonstrated that heavy mobile device usage is correlated with a weaker tendency to delay gratification and a greater inclination toward impulsive behavior. A study in China revealed that TikTok’s personalized algorithm selected videos activated the prefrontal cortex (PFC) that is responsible for controlling the limbic reward system and higher functions (self-control, salience attribution, and awareness), as well as the ventral tegmental area that controls reward consumption. The overuse of TikTok was similar to drug abuse, when an increase in dopamine in the reward circuit makes the brain crave more substance or short videos. 

The studies were done on adults, so imagine how children’s reward system is overloaded when they use TikTok for a long time. Furthermore, studies have revealed that the increase in content consumption leads to more rapid exhaustion of limited attention resources (aka TikTok brain). So using TikTok for a long time makes your kid more impulsive and addicted and decreases their ability to learn, remember things, and delay gratification.

The National Service on Sexual Exploitation has gathered a substantial amount of evidence regarding the manner in which sexual content is displayed to minors on TikTok.

A significant number of lyrics violate TikTok’s Community Guidelines, which prohibit content that contains sexually explicit language for sexual gratification and is available to minors under 13 years of age, often with sexualized dancing.

3. TikTok is promoting OnlyFans to minors.

“Within 30 seconds of creating a 13-year-old account and searching “OnlyFans,” our researcher was led to countless videos and hashtags promoting OnlyFans, most of which glamorize paid sex and normalize sexual exploitation.”

4. TikTok is still used by sexual predators today.

Exploiters use TikTok to find and view minor users, comment on videos, and message children. They often ask for or send sexually explicit videos or pictures (aka sexting)

An investigation conducted by the BBC has revealed that numerous sexually explicit comments (sexting) have been discovered on videos uploaded by children in 2019. Some comments contained sexually suggestive messages, while others contained threatening or violent messages.

According to data released by the Internet 2.0 cybersecurity company, TikTok collects information on user devices, such as contact lists and calendars, scans hard drives, and geolocates devices every hour. TikTok even collects altitude data, letting them know what floor the gadget is on. Although TikTok has repeatedly denied its connection to the Chinese government, Internet 2.0 has found that Chinese authorities can actually access device data.

According to the Center for Countering Digital Hate report: “videos about mental health or body image were served by TikTok on a Standard Teen Accounts every 39 seconds. Half of the mental health content on TikTok “reported or expressed symptoms of mental distress”.

TikTok recommended content about eating disorders, self-harm, or suicide within minutes in some cases.

7. TikTok allows kids under 13 to use the app.

In 2020, the Information Commissioner’s Office of the UK said that TikTok allowed up to 1.4 million children who were not 13 years old to use the app, which went against British rules about protecting their personal information. TikTok was fined $15.9 million.

8. Cyberbullying

There were more requests from Australia’s eSafety Commissioner to remove posts from TikTok that bullied children in the past 18 months than any other social media platform.

One study found that experiencing cyberbullying was associated with suicidality. Adriana Kuch, a fourteen-year-old from Berkley, New Jersey, was subjected to bullying on February 1st when she was attacked in school, captured on video, and uploaded it to TikTok. The following day, Adriana committed suicide. 

The responsibility lies with the third parties who upload harmful content. TikTok customer support usually ignores reports and removes dangerous content and comments only after public backlash.

TikTok is a dangerous app that harvests data and exposes minors to sexual content. It also attracts predators and bullies. Montana became the first US state to prohibit mobile application stores from offering the app within the state. India imposed a national ban on the use of TikTok in 2020. Denmark, Belgium, Canada, and Australia have prohibited the installation of TikTok on the phones of government officials.
